SOMETHING A LITTLE DIFFERENT? Dog and Gun
CHANGES FROM GUIDE Removed - Old Farmhouse - No Real Ale | | Dog and Gun High St, East Butterwick, DN17 3AJ T 01724 782324 W www.darktibe.co.uk G David (Dixie) Dean CP TV BM P O 6 to 11 Mon - Wed, 5 to 11 Thu - Fri, 12 to 11 Sat - Sun. I just know that you will go the extra mile to find something very special. The Dog and Gun is well out of walking distance and so its delights are limited to those who can organise a driver to take you there. The pub is very much a work in progress. Dixie has moved the nationally-renowned DarkTribe brewery from Gunness to the rear of this 200 year old river side inn. He is working with great gusto to create what makes the proper traditional pub. It has roaring log fires in winter, tiled floor in the bar, and; something unique in my experience, the return of the Dog and Gun bus seats. So much for trendy café bars, this pub can be compared to a buffet bar as found in a bus station. Further developments include the re-opening of the room that once had a pool table, and the enclosure of the outside loos. This development may not be so popular with the local postman who shared this convenience with me before opening time. The regulars travel from the many surrounding hamlets, desperate to find a real pub, while the locals devote their efforts to food and lager. In summer this is perfect cycling country and, being so remote, makes a good destination point for walkers on the levee that lies opposite the pub. A Saturday visit will find Judy at the helm. On Sundays the pubs’ team might be sampling a post - match ale. I really look forward to revisiting this next year as no doubt the pub establishes a fine reputation as the DarkTribe tap. This is by far my favourite pub in Scunthorpe for real ale; it has style in everything it does and it comes highly recommended from fans across the country. The Honest Lawyer is a small, long bar with wooden floors and panelled walls. This busy pub has it all: quality, knowledgeable service, good conversation and regulars who love footie and real ale. My recent second visit found the company of Scunthorpe fans who were all too ready to help out with the essential taxis to the ground for our group of travelling real ale and footie fans. We were then able to watch the lunchtime game and sample from six real ales without any real worry of missing the game. UPDATE: Timothy Taylor and Daleside ales now form the staples in the real ale diet that now has six or more real ales. Match-day specials are also on the menu. MP TV BM P D O 10 to 11, 12 to 11 Sun. Set back from the suburban village Ashby High Street and attached to a snooker club, this is a pub that asks questions. How does it balance restaurant trade with great beer choice? Why can't other Scunny pubs offer this? How much is a taxi to the ground? It is large enough for the restaurant and ale fans to be separate having two very different bar areas but I would use this pub if I wanted good food with quality ale. The pub is very comfortable and specialises in traditional English food as well as ale. The locals tell me it is very popular because of the Old Peculier being on sale. They also enthuse at the relaxed attitude to real ale tickers who have made an extra effort to find it as it is not on the usual town centre or station routes. So for me it is a pub to find early in the day, grab a meal, sit in the seat with a view through the leaded windows and decide if it is a taxi or buses to the ground. UPDATE: The pub is totally unchanged.
